BJP launches six-day dharna in Bengal’s Durgapur over medical student’s ‘gang rape’

Kolkata: The Opposition BJP on Monday launched a six-day sit-in at Durgapur in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district to protest the alleged gang rape of a medical student of a private college in the industrial city.

The dharna was launched by the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, in the City Centre area.

Launching a sharp attack from the protest stage, Adhikari said, “We failed to protect our sister from Odisha and the CM of this state asks women to figure out their own protection.”

“Kolkata HC has given us permission for a seven-day Dharna. We will start it from tomorrow…We welcome their verdict… There is no democracy here; the police cannot stop firing but only stop the BJP’s protest. The police can arrest BJP leaders but not the accused,” said Majumdar while speaking to reporters.

The union minister said no firing could stop the BJP’s determination to carry out its seven-day march. His remarks hinted at the alleged firing at a BJP leader this morning in Bhatpara of North 24 Parganas. Earlier in the day, senior BJP leader Suvendhu Adhikari condemned the firing incident, saying, “This is how Mamata Banerjee & TMC are trying to force BJP off the street.”
“TMC goon opening fire on eminent BJP Leader Priyangu Pandey’s vehicle at Bhatpara. The driver of the vehicle is shot. This is how Mamata Banerjee & TMC are trying to force BJP off the street. The Bandh is successful, and people have supported it wholeheartedly. The toxic cocktail of Police & TMC Goons won’t be able to scare BJP,” wrote Adhikari on X, formerly Twitter.
