Vijayawada: In a significant move toward combating climate change, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has partnered with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under India’s Ministry of Power, to drive the Mission LiFE initiative. This ambitious program aims to promote sustainable living and energy efficiency across the state, setting new benchmarks in environmental responsibility.
The collaborative mission seeks to bring energy efficiency practices to the forefront, targeting major southern cities, including Tirupati, Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Vijayawada, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Trivandrum. Union Territories are also included in the campaign, which will be rolled out in phases. The initiative’s goal is to improve the state’s economy, enhance energy security, and improve the quality of life for its citizens by promoting sustainable habits.
At a key meeting, A Chandra Shekhara Reddy, Media Adviser for BEE in Southern States, and BAV Kumar Reddy, CEO of Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM), met with K. Vijayanand, Special Chief Secretary of the Energy Department. Together, they discussed strategies for promoting Mission LiFE, and Vijayanand unveiled a special book dedicated to the mission, reaffirming the state’s commitment to the cause.
Vijayanand expressed optimism about Mission LiFE’s potential to transform both rural and urban areas. He emphasized that energy efficiency will play a pivotal role in addressing climate change in Andhra Pradesh, with the government involving all key departments to meet the ambitious targets set by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. The state aims to emerge as a leader in energy efficiency, delivering high-quality and cost-effective power while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
As part of the initiative, Andhra Pradesh is collaborating with BEE and Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), a Central Public Sector Undertaking, to draft a comprehensive energy efficiency roadmap. This plan is expected to fuel economic growth while ensuring environmental protection and boosting demand for eco-friendly products and services.
Mission LiFE’s 75 actionable steps include promoting the use of LED lighting, public transport, electric vehicles, solar energy, and other sustainable practices. By adopting these measures, Andhra Pradesh aims to improve public health, reduce pollution, and support local businesses, positioning the state as a leader in green technology.
With the launch of the Clean Energy Policy 2024, Andhra Pradesh is poised to become a hub for renewable energy investments and manufacturing. The state aims to develop 160 GW of renewable energy, creating significant employment opportunities and reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable future.
