Working closely with stakeholders: Air India after AAIB releases initial report on plane crash

New Delhi:  Air India on Saturday said it is working closely with regulators and other stakeholders, and will continue to cooperate with the authorities in the ongoing probe into the Ahmedabad plane crash after AAIB released its preliminary report.

On June 12, the airline’s Boeing 787-8 plane operating flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed soon after takeoff off and 260 people died in the accident.

“We acknowledge receipt of the preliminary report released by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) today, 12 July 2025,” the airline said in a post on X.

“Air India stands in solidarity with the families and those affected by the AI171 accident. We continue to mourn the loss and are fully committed to providing support during this difficult time,” it also noted.

On June 12, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff, resulting in the deaths of over 270 people, including several international passengers and students residing in a college hostel. Only one person survived the tragic accident.

According to the AAIB report, the aircraft suffered a catastrophic loss of power just seconds after becoming airborne. Both engines reportedly shut down within 32 seconds of takeoff after the engine fuel control switches were momentarily turned off, cutting off the fuel supply and leading to an unrecoverable stall.

The probe is being conducted with the participation of international experts, including representatives from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Boeing, General Electric (GE), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Investigators from the UK, Portugal, and Canada are also involved, as the crash claimed the lives of several of their citizens.
