T’gana launches India’s first state-negotiated EV discount for govt employees

Hyderabad: Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Tuesday announced the country’s first state-negotiated EV discount initiative to offer a rebate of up to 20 per cent on electric two- and four-wheelers for government employees.

After multiple rounds of negotiations with EV manufacturers–Mahindra Electric, Ola Electric, Gravton Motors, and Ather Energy, the discounts of up to 20 per cent on EVs were secured, and the move could translate into savings of up to Rs 4 lakh per employee, an official release said. The discount is applicable to around five lakh government employees in Telangana.

The state government has been implementing measures to promote electric mobility, with over two lakh EVs currently in use, accounting for about five per cent of vehicles in the state. Officials said incentives such as 100 per cent tax exemption had contributed to increased EV sales, with around 50,000 vehicles sold in the first six months of 2025.

The state-run public transport system operates 875 electric buses connecting 373 colonies in the capital, with plans to expand the fleet to 2,800 buses by 2030.
