Amaravati: Egg puffs have unexpectedly become the focal point of a political controversy in Andhra Pradesh, as the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) zeroes in on the alleged extravagant spending by former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy during his tenure. The TDP has brought the issue to light, questioning Reddy’s financial prudence and triggering a heated debate between the TDP, led by Chandrababu Naidu, and the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).
The TDP has leveled serious accusations against the previous YSRCP government, claiming that an astonishing Rs 3.62 crores were spent on egg puffs between 2019 and 2024. This revelation, according to a report widely circulated on social media, suggests that the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) spent an average of Rs 72 lakhs annually on these snacks, translating to a daily consumption of 993 egg puffs. Over the five-year period, this amounts to a staggering 18 lakh egg puffs.
The disclosure has ignited a firestorm of criticism, with the TDP raising alarms over what they describe as a blatant misuse of public funds under Reddy’s administration. The party’s response has been sharp and sardonic, as they took to social media platform X to mock the YSRCP. The TDP posted, “Nobody is eggs-aggerating. That’s your area of eggs-pertise. Everyone’s just eggs-pressing facts that are beginning to hatch out of shells now. This is just the beginning of an eggs-ploration into your misdeeds. Don’t be terri-fried so early, YSRCP. (BTW, can that Y stand for yolk now?)”
This witty jibe was a direct counter to the YSRCP’s earlier tweet, in which the party accused a journalist of disseminating baseless rumors without proper verification or credible sources.
The controversy, now dubbed the “Egg Puff Scandal,” has escalated as the TDP government, under Chandrababu Naidu’s leadership, launched a comprehensive investigation into the financial irregularities of the previous regime. This scandal follows closely on the heels of another accusation against Reddy, where the TDP alleged that he had constructed a luxurious resort on Rushikonda Hill in Visakhapatnam for personal use, further intensifying the political battle in the state.
With the TDP ramping up its scrutiny of Reddy’s administration, the political atmosphere in Andhra Pradesh is charged, with both parties trading barbs over governance and public accountability. The unfolding drama is sure to keep the state’s citizens and political observers riveted as the inquiry progresses.
