Hyderabad: BJP MP M Raghunandan Rao on Sunday received fresh “threat calls” on his phone, his office said.
Rao, Lok Sabha member from Medak in Telangana, got threat calls on June 23, with the caller identifying himself as a Maoist from Madhya Pradesh.
The callers told him on Sunday that five teams are on the job to eliminate him as per the orders of the Maoist committee of Andhra Pradesh, Rao’s office said.
The caller, believed to be associated with Maoist groups, claimed that five Maoist teams had been deployed to track and assassinate Raghunandan Rao. The voice on the call reportedly stated that these groups were acting under the instructions of the Andhra Pradesh Committee leadership, adding that they were aware police could trace the call as internet-based calling services were being used.
This alarming call comes days after a similar threat was issued to the MP on June 23, prompting Raghunandan Rao to lodge formal complaints with Sangareddy SP Paritosh Pankaj, Medak SP Dr. AV Srinivas Rao, and Telangana DGP Dr. Jitender.
Following the latest development, the MP once again contacted the authorities and shared details of the phone numbers and threat content, urging immediate action and enhanced security.
Police sources confirmed that they are treating the matter with utmost seriousness. Intelligence agencies have been roped in to trace the origin of the calls, while local police have tightened security around the MP.
Investigators are also probing whether there is a larger Maoist plot targeting political leaders, especially those vocal about extremist activities.
BJP leaders in Telangana have condemned the threats and demanded that the state government ensure Raghunandan Rao’s safety. They also urged swift investigation and arrests of those behind the intimidation.
