Chandanakkavu Bhagavathy Temple

Chandanakkavu Bhagavathy Temple is a revered Hindu temple in Kurumbathur, Malappuram district, Kerala. Bhagavathy is a revered Hindu goddess and a powerful form of Shakti (the divine feminine energy). Depending on regional traditions, she is often identified with Durga, Parvati, or Kali.

Chandanakkavu is renowned as the birthplace of Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, the esteemed Sanskrit scholar and author of ‘Narayaneeyam,’ a devotional composition dedicated to Lord Krishna. The temple is believed to have been a significant center for Vedic learning, where Bhattathiri received his early education. It is said that he regularly worshipped at this temple during his formative years.​

As per the legend, before he traveled to Guruvayur Temple to seek divine blessings for his illness (paralysis/rheumatism), Bhattathiri performed special prayers and installed the idol of Bhagavathy at Chandanakkavu. This act is believed to have deepened the temple’s spiritual significance, making it a sacred place for devotees seeking divine grace and knowledge.
