Vande Guru Paramparaam… Bhava Shankara Desika Me Saranam

By Dr. Sandhyaa Bombay

As we celebrate Shankara Jayanthi, we pay tribute to our guru through hymns of praise, reflecting our devotion and gratitude. This bond between guru and disciple inspires us to realize our potential and navigate life’s complexities. What better tribute than a devoted disciple singing heartfelt hymns? Through melody, we honor the wisdom imparted, allowing the essence of the guru’s teachings to resonate in our hearts. Let the echoes of gratitude between guru and disciple fill the air, creating a reverent tapestry of learning and transformation. Together, we celebrate the transformative power of a guru’s guidance, reminding us that self-discovery and enlightenment enrich our lives. By recognizing our spiritual guides, we commit to embracing their lessons and sharing that light with others.

Thotaka Charya, a key disciple of Adi Shankara in the 8th century, significantly contributed to the spread of Advaita Vedanta, focusing on non-duality. In his poetic work, the Thotakashtakam, he honors Shankara and emphasizes the connection between the individual self (Atman) and ultimate reality (Brahman). His influence extended beyond poetry to establishing monastic traditions centered on discipline and community. The Thotakashtakam is unique—it serves both as a philosophical treatise and a devotional hymn, blending the teachings of the guru with Advaita Vedanta practices. Thotaka Charya expresses a deep yearning for spiritual growth and connection with his guru, using phrases like “Bhava Shankara Desika Me Saranam” to illustrate his heartfelt request for guidance and protection on the journey toward enlightenment. Each line reflects profound reverence for the guru’s role in spiritual awakening.

Thotaka Charya immerses himself in the sacred quest for divine wisdom in the stillness of his prayers. Each whispered plea bridges him to higher understanding as he opens his heart in devotion. His journey becomes a dance of faith and a quest for truth, fueling his every breath. In this sacred space, he acknowledges the guru as his steadfast refuge—an unwavering guiding light that pierces through the swirling chaos of worldly confusion. Here, amidst the noise, he finds clarity, purpose, and a sense of belonging that nourishes his spirit.

“Karunavarunalaya paalaya maam, bhavasagaradukha vidunahrudam” captures his heartfelt plea. Tormented by the cycle of rebirths, he longs for enlightenment, seeking clarity to unravel the wisdom woven through time. His soul yearns for understanding to lift the burdens of existence. “O Shankara,” he implores, “you are the wellspring of joy for innumerable souls, illuminating the paths of those who seek your grace. Bestow upon me the wisdom to comprehend God’s divine essence and the soul’s intricacies. I recognize you as my refuge, guiding me away from the chaos of this tumultuous world and toward the tranquility of understanding.”

Through his heartfelt appeals, Thotaka Charya recognizes the vital role of the guru in nurturing virtuous deeds and guiding one through life’s uncertainties. He expresses, “Your presence shines like a beacon,” illuminating his path and providing the strength he needs to face challenges. In conclusion, he acknowledges the guru’s ability to take on many forms, all dedicated to the salvation of humanity. Like a brilliant sun, the guru illuminates the world, offering guidance through life’s complexities.

The phrase “Guru-pungava pungava ketana te” reflects deep respect and admiration, highlighting the teacher’s profound impact on his life and learning journey. Truly, you are the greatest of all Teachers; no sage can rival your boundless kindness and unwavering truth extended to those who earnestly seek your guidance. In a realm where shadows dance and knowledge eludes me, I stand before you, O Teacher, an empty vessel yearning to be filled. The depths of my mind are tangled in a fog of misunderstanding, leaving me lost and bewildered. I have no treasure to call my own, neither in gold nor wisdom. With an earnest heart, I implore you to shower your divine grace upon me. Let your light be the beacon that guides me through this turbulent ocean of doubt and confusion.

As we gather to celebrate Shankara Jayanthi, let us reflect on the profound teachings of our gurus, which guide us toward a life filled with wisdom and compassion. Each moment of reflection and prayer serves as a reminder that we are part of a greater journey—one that encourages us to share knowledge and enlightenment. May we draw inspiration from Adi Shankara and Thotaka Charya, letting their teachings illuminate our paths and inspire us to help others in their quest for self-discovery and understanding. Together, let us embrace this opportunity to grow in our spiritual journeys and become beacons of light for those around us.
