Neerbagilu Anjaneya Swamy Temple – Hassan

Neerbagilu Anjaneya Swamy Temple is located in Gandhi Bazaar area of Hassan, in Karnataka. The presiding deity of the temple is Sri Neerbagilu Anjaneya Swamy (Lord Hanuman), who is worshipped as the embodiment of strength, devotion, courage, and protection.

The temple is believed to be around 700–800 years old. According to historical tradition, the temple was originally established around 1223–1224 CE by Polalva, a commander and minister under Vira Narasimha II of the Hoysala Empire. In the earliest period, only the sacred portion of Lord Hanuman’s idol existed at the site without a complete temple structure. Later, about 200–250 years ago, devotees constructed a full temple building around the sacred spot. The shrine has been renovated and maintained over time while preserving its original spiritual importance.

The temple has a traditional Karnataka-style structure with a simple yet sacred design. The sanctum houses the ancient idol of Lord Hanuman, which is believed to be the original divine manifestation at this place. The present temple structure reflects later-period construction, built around the sacred site by devotees. The temple premises are neat and peaceful, providing a calm atmosphere for prayer and meditation.

The name “Neerbagilu” comes from two Kannada words — Neeru, meaning water, and Bagil,u meaning entrance or doorway. The temple’s name is directly connected with a divine event involving sacred water.

According to local tradition, many centuries ago this place was not a full temple but only a sacred spot where the divine portion of Lord Hanuman’s idol existed. The area depended on a nearby lake called Devgere Lake, which was the main water source for the region.

It is believed that the water from Devgere Lake once flowed forcefully towards the sacred idol and continuously touched the feet of Lord Hanuman. This miraculous flow of water was considered a divine sign showing the presence and blessing of the deity. Because the water reached the entrance of the sacred idol, the place came to be known as “Neerbagilu,” meaning the entrance where water flows to the Lord.

Devotees believed that the water touching the deity symbolized purification, divine grace, and protection of the region. The flowing water was considered sacred and was believed to remove sins, bring prosperity, and protect people from suffering. The miracle strengthened faith among the villagers, and the place gradually became a powerful centre of worship.
