Bijasan Mata Temple is located in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on a small hill called Bijasan Tekri. The main deity of this temple is Maa Bijasan, who is a form of Goddess Durga. She is believed to be a powerful mother goddess who blesses her devotees with protection, courage, and success.
Bijasan Mata is considered to be the kuladevi of the Hindu Gadariya community.
The temple has a simple yet traditional Maratha-style architecture. It is built using stone and features a peaceful, open courtyard where devotees can sit and meditate. The temple structure includes a mandapa (pillared hall) and garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) where the deity is placed. The clean, spacious environment and hilltop location offer a serene spiritual experience. There are steps leading up to the temple and a motorable road.
The temple was built in 1760 by Maharaja Shivaji Rao Holkar, a ruler from the Holkar dynasty of Indore. It was originally established as a small shrine to honor the family’s chosen goddess. Over time, due to the increasing faith of devotees, the temple was expanded and became one of the most visited religious places in Indore. The Holkar rulers were strong patrons of Hindu temples and festivals, and their legacy continues through this temple.
Long ago, the hill now known as Bijasan Tekri was considered a spiritually powerful place, where sages and warriors used to meditate and perform penance. According to legend, this hill was once part of a dense forest and a natural retreat for tapasvis (saints) seeking divine visions.
The main deity, Maa Bijasan, is believed to be a fierce and protective form of Goddess Durga. The name “Bijasan” comes from “Vijaya” (victory) and “Asan” (seat), meaning “the seat of victory”. It is said that the goddess took her place on this hill to bless her devotees with strength and victory in their lives.
One of the most popular stories associated with the temple is about two brave warrior brothers, Alha and Udal, who fought under King Prithviraj Chauhan. Before a great battle, the brothers are believed to have prayed at this hill to Maa Bijasan, asking for her divine protection and blessings. Pleased with their devotion, the goddess is said to have appeared to them in a divine vision and granted them strength and courage to face their enemies.
Since then, people started worshipping the goddess here as “Vijayasan Devi”, the one who brings victory and protects the righteous. Over time, a small shrine was built on this sacred spot, which later became the Bijasan Mata Temple we see today.
Devotees believe that Maa Bijasan listens to sincere prayers and fulfills wishes, especially for protection from evil, family peace, and fertility. Many childless couples, newly married couples, and people in distress come here to seek her blessings.
Even today, the divine energy of the goddess is said to be strongly felt on the hill, and devotees experience peace, courage, and mental strength after praying here.
The biggest festival celebrated at the temple is Navratri, the nine-day festival dedicated to Goddess Durga. During this time, thousands of devotees visit the temple to offer prayers, perform special pujas, and attend cultural programs. The temple is beautifully decorated with lights and flowers. A large fair (mela) is also organized during this period with food stalls, devotional music, and local handicrafts. Other festivals like Dussehra and Diwali are also celebrated with great devotion.
