Brahma Sarovar- Sarveshwar Temple is located at Kurukshetra in the state of Haryana. A sacred shrine dedicated to Lord Parama Shiva called Sarveshwar Mahadev stands within the Sarovar, accessible by a small bridge.

Brahma Sarovar is the most attractive place in Kurukshetra. Its history is very interesting. It is said that Lord Brahma is said to have created the universe from the holy land after a huge Yajna. In the last days of the battle, Dhuryodhana in Mahabharata hid himself underwater to save him from Bhima. There is a place where Draupadi washed her hair filled with Dushashana’s blood.

Sarveshwar Mahadev Temple, commonly known as Brahma Sarovar Temple, is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The temple is mostly constructed from buff sandstone, with marble in some parts. From the compound, there are three entrance doors to the temple, each with carved floral designs.

A concrete arch bridge links the temple to the bank. This temple has shrines for Lord Hanuman and Lord Garuda.

Sarveshwar Mahadev temple of Lord Shiva in the middle of the lake. It is believed that this Shivalinga itself manifested itself. According to the legend Lord Brahma used to worship Lord Shiva in this temple. During the battle of Mahabharata, the temple was destroyed by war in the daytime and reconstructed at night every day. Mughal emperors ruined it during their supremacy and later, Hari Giri Gosai Jee renovated it in the 18th century.

The Pandavas were liberated from their sins by taking a dip in the lake during the war.

The lake offers a breath-taking sight during the Gita Jayanti celebrations held each year in the last week of November and early December when a ‘deep daan’ ceremony of floating lamps in water and Aarti occurs.

The temple is viewed best from Krishna Ghat during sunset. The setting sun’s reddish golden colour reflects into the pond making the image of the temple in water look saintly. Many people gather here for evening Aarti. Walking around the temple and listening to the chants of mantras is known to heal one’s soul.
