Ettukai Amman Temple, located in the serene Kolli Hills of Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to Goddess Ettukai Amman, also known as Kollipavai. This temple holds immense historical and spiritual significance, originating in ancient Tamil traditions.

According to legend, the Kolli Hills were once a peaceful haven where sages chose to meditate and perform penance. However, their tranquility was disrupted by the relentless disturbances of demons. Seeking protection, the sages prayed fervently to Kollipavai, a manifestation of Goddess Ettukai Amman. Answering their prayers, the goddess used her enchanting smile to lure and chase away the demons before ultimately vanquishing them. This act safeguarded the sages and ensured the sanctity of the Kolli Hills, making Kollipavai a revered guardian deity of the region.
Kolli Hills, known for their abundant medicinal herbs, are believed to be home to many saints and Siddhas who meditate there. According to legend, the revered Saint Gorakh Nath had a cave in these mountains. These saints requested the demon architect Maya to create an idol called “The Maid of Death” to attract and eliminate evil beings. The idol would lure wrongdoers with her smile and destroy them. However, the temple priest describes Kolli Paavai as a protective goddess for the local villagers. During rituals, the priest anoints the idol with sandal paste, performs dances, and, in a trance, answers devotees’ questions before distributing sacred ash as prasadam. It’s also believed that Siddhas seeking rare herbs first seek permission from Kolli Paavai to ensure the herbs’ full potency.
The goddess is worshipped by locals and devotees who seek her blessings for protection, marriage, childbirth, and reconciliation.
The temple celebrates festivals with great enthusiasm, particularly on Amavasya (new moon days) and Saturdays, which attract large gatherings. Devotees perform special poojas, and the belief that wishes made here are fulfilled within three days enhances the temple’s significance.
