Ancient Jhang Ashram where Mughal Emperor Jahangir had camped

Around 1620 AD, Mughal emperor Jahangir (Salim) passed through this route to go to the fort of Kangra situated on the hills of northeastern Punjab. During that time, his army had camped in this area to rest. Then he met the local saint, Lohalangar Ji Maharaj. Then, troubled by the problem of drinking water, the army of Emperor Jahangir dug a pond there. Which is today famous as Jahangir Talab.

Barwa village, located at the end of the subdivision Siwani Mandi of Bhiwani district of Haryana, touches Hisar district. One of the oldest villages of Haryana, Barwa was earlier known as Bad-Barwa. Barwa village is a village of many historical evidences. It has been counted among the magnificent villages of havelis in the country. This village has been excellent in the fields of architecture, sculpture, literature, painting, business, religion, and education since ancient times. Barwa village has within itself one such religious heritage, ‘Jhang-Ashram.’ Whose grandeur is immense and whose identity is concrete. Jhang Ashram Barwa is located about 27 kilometers away from Hisar city. It has the Samadhi of Mahant-Puris as well as temples of Hindu gods and goddesses. People from all over the country come to this historical place and visit the ashram. People want to follow the sentiments of this place in their lives.

History: In ancient times (about four hundred years ago), Sant Purush Lohalangar Ji Maharaj used to do penance in the forest area of Barwa. During this time, around 1620-21 AD, Mughal emperor Jahangir passed through this route to go to the fort of Kangra situated on the hills of northeastern Punjab. During this time, his army had camped in this area to rest. That’s when he met Sant Purush Lohalangar Ji Maharaj. Troubled by the problem of drinking water, the army of emperor Jahangir dug a pond here, which is famous today as Jahangir Talab.

Chronology: Years after the death of Lohalangar Giri Ji, after Sawai Giri, Chandan Giri, and Charan Puri (who finally attained Jeevat Samadhi), Mahant Bishambar Giri Ji took charge of this ashram and did penance here till he was alive. He, along with his real brother, Prem Giri Ji Maharaj, carried forward the tradition of the ashram and continued religious rituals here, and one day Prem Giri Ji attained Jeevat Samadhi. After him, Sant Purush Hanuman Giri Ji and Mahant Sewagiri Ji Maharaj remained on the throne of the ashram. Presently, Mahant Shri Sewagiri Ji Maharaj has been maintaining our ancient saint tradition for the last forty years and is engaged in wishing well for the region.

Recognition: Regarding the Jhang Ashram of Barwa, the people of the village and the surrounding area believe that the Jhang Ashram is a spiritual miracle for the region. People believe that it is the result of the glory and divine power of the saints of the ashram that the areas around Barwa have to suffer losses due to hailstorms and locusts. However, due to the influence of the ashram, such a thing has never happened in the area of village Barwa in the past years. Not only this, there is also a legend among the elderly people here that Maharaj Charan Puri ji of the ashram was rich in magical powers. He claimed that there would never be a loss of even a penny in the village of Barwa due to hailstorms and locusts. He was an elusive saint and was an expert in changing his appearance. At night, he used to roam around in the form of a lion. This is the reason that entry into the ashram was prohibited after 10 pm during his stay. Modern science may not agree with these facts, yet this ashram is a symbol of unwavering faith and belief for the people of the village and the surrounding area. People experience immense peace and a divine power when they come here.

Religious rituals: Bhajans, Kirtans, and Yagnas are held every day at Jhang Ashram in Barwa. But on the death anniversary (Magh Krishna Paksha 10th) of the most revered founder saint of the ashram, Mahant Vishambar Giri Ji, a national saint gathering and Bhandari is organized by the ashram’s congregation. In which thousands of saints and devotees reach the ashram for darshan. During this time, Maha Yagnas are performed for peace in the area, and wishes for peace are made.

How the expenses of the ashram are managed: The burden of daily expenses in the ashram is borne by the amount received as donations. The annual account of which is maintained. Not only this, the ashram has its own hundreds of acres of land, the income of which is used to pay for the religious programs held here. Along with this, the Jhang Mandali cooperates in every way in the work of the ashram. Jhang Ashram is located about 27 kilometers away from Barwa, Hisar city. It has the Samadhi of Mahant-Puris as well as temples of Hindu deities. The enlightened citizens of the village, Nahar Singh Tanwar, Master Ajay Sharma, Sanjay Swami, and Lal Singh Lalu, told that people from many cities across the country come to this historical place, and they want to know the ashram, and they want to follow it in their life. There are many routes to reach here.

By Air: The nearest airport to Delhi is Hisar. There are regular flights to Delhi and Chandigarh. Further travel can be done by road. By Train: The nearest railway stations from Hisar are Naloi Barwa and Siwani. There are two railway stations about 4 km from the ashram. By road, Barwa Jhang is connected with the Hisar-Rajgarh National Highway. The ashram is located on Naloi Road, about 2 km from the bus stand of Barwa village.
