As the profound discussion on values, duties, and the path ahead molded into a refined understanding, Rama strode at the forefront with the majestic gait of a lion. Behind him, Sita followed gracefully, embodying the poise of a lioness, while Lakshmana mirrored Rama’s dignity. As they journeyed through the rugged terrains of rockslides and serene slopes, nature unveiled its finest artistry. They passed through charming groves of trees, delicate creepers, and thick underbrush, relishing a journey of natural splendour.
Their path led them past sand dunes and playful flocks of birds, frolicking as though bathing in the river’s sparkling waters. Flirtatious birds swirled with bizarre geese over the shallow pools, filling the air with their lively chirps. As they entered the verdant carpet of the forest, adorned with beds of flowers and pollen sprinkled like golden dust, all weariness melted away. Herds of spotted deer darted across the lush plains, while wild boars dug fervently into the earth for their beloved tubers and yams.
A little farther, they came upon herds of rook feasting on bamboo shoots, their sounds mingling with the patter of leaves. Ahead, mighty elephants feasted on dense sugarcane thickets, oblivious to their surroundings, while a group of bears perched on rocky ledges bent tree branches to reach hanging honeycombs. The trio marvelled at the captivating scenes, an ode to the boundless creativity of nature.
As the sun dipped low in the western sky, they beheld a vast, shimmering lake. Floating lilies and lotuses adorned its surface, while elephants frolicked in the water, and lively birds danced upon their backs. Circling flocks of birds formed shapes in the sky like rolling clouds. Swans and teals filled the lake, imbuing the scene with vibrant life. Suddenly, strains of divine music and rhythmic dance emanated from the waters, enchanting the travellers.
Curious but unable to trace its source, they stumbled upon a sage deep in meditation, Dharmabruth. Rama, with humble reverence, inquired, “O pious sage, pray reveal the origin of this celestial music and dance. If it is no secret, we seek your wisdom.” The sage began his tale:
“This lake, O Rama, is called Panchapsara, forever resplendent and holy. Its creation stems from the merits of Sage Mandakarni’s penance. Standing neck-deep in its waters for thousands of years, he survived on pure air, seeking divine wisdom. The cardinals, fearing his ascension to their realms, sent five celestial beauties to sway him towards earthly joys. In their presence, rituals were conducted, and they became his life companions. Through his virtue, the sage transformed this pond into a divine lake, with an abode beneath its waters where the celestial maidens perform their eternal dance.”
Awestruck by the tale, the trio moved forward, reaching a serene hermitage teeming with holy vibrations and gentle animals. Rama spent time with the sages, engaging in their rituals and learning from their wisdom. The trio travelled across the Dandakaranya forest for nearly ten years, visiting hermitages and embracing the sages’ transformative practices.
One day, in the ashram of Sage Suteekshna, Rama inquired about the revered Sage Agastya. “O sage, I have heard of his unparalleled ascetic merits and wish to seek his blessings. But in this vast forest, I am uncertain of his abode.”
