Rama, Lakshmana, Sita Crossed Ganga, Yamuna, Confluence

A distinct pair, Rama and Sita, departed from the hermitage of the venerable sage Bharadwaja. As custom dictated, the sage graciously accompanied them for a short distance before bidding them farewell. Rama, reaching the sacred confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna, turned westward, following the gentle flow of the Ganga.

“O Rama and Lakshmana,” Bharadwaja had advised, “when you arrive at the swift waters of the Yamuna, daughter of the Sun God, perform your holy oblations at this ancient and sanctified site. Build a sturdy raft to cross the river. Once you have crossed, you will come upon the sprawling Banyan tree known as Shyama, a haven of profound serenity. There, clusters of towering trees stand united, their canopies forming a sacred retreat for accomplished sages who reside in subtle forms.

“Sita should offer her prayers to the sages, seeking their blessings to fulfil your ascetic vows. This tree is famed for granting boons to those who petition it. Should you wish you may linger under its auspicious shade? If not, proceed five miles further, where you will find forests of moduga trees—flames of the forest—plum clusters, and flourishing bamboo groves beside the Yamuna’s flowing waters. As you journey deeper, you will encounter woodland alive with blue blossoms, laden fruits, and verdant leaves.

“Pass through this serene forest; it is devoid of predators, free from the ravages of fire, and untainted by intruders. It shall offer you a safe passage to Mount Chitrakuta. I have traversed this path many times unscathed. May your journey be tranquil and fulfilling?”

Filled with gratitude, Rama humbly requested Bharadwaja to return, honouring the sage’s boundary of accompaniment. “Bharadwaja has bestowed great kindness upon us,” he remarked to Lakshmana. With uplifted spirits, Rama and Lakshmana guarded Sita as they reached the Yamuna’s banks.

Pausing momentarily, they contemplated crossing the river. Gathering wooden logs, they lashed them together with wild grass, creating a makeshift raft. Lakshmana skillfully crafted a seat for Sita using branches of jamun and rattan trees. Rama gently assisted Sita onto the raft, and, with practised hands, the brothers navigated the waters. They reached the opposite shore with ease, where Sita offered her devout prayers:

“O Yamuna Devi, daughter of Aditya, we have crossed your swift waters with your grace. Bless us to fulfill our ascetic vow. Upon our return, I vow to distribute cows to Vedic scholars and anoint you with a thousand Purna Ghatas, your cherished offering.”

Leaving the raft behind, the trio continued on foot until they reached the majestic Banyan tree, Shyama. They offered reverent prayers, and Sita spoke, “O divine tree, accept my homage. Grant me this boon: may my husband complete his ascetic vow and return safely to Ayodhya.” Closing her eyes in meditation, Sita sought blessings, while Rama instructed, “O Lakshmana, walk ahead with Sita. I shall follow, guarding her. Fulfill her every request for flowers or fruits.”

Between the brothers, Sita walked with the grace of a celestial she-elephant. Her eyes sparkled with wonder as she observed new creepers, blossoms, and fruit-laden branches. She gathered flowers in delight, holding them close, her heart enraptured by the beauty around her. She marvelled at the clean sand dunes, the gentle rustle of bamboo leaves, and the melodious chorus of swans and peacocks.

The brothers, too, took joy in the sights—frolicking animals, flowing waters, and the harmony of nature. Lakshmana collected fruits and roots for their sustenance, and as dusk settled, they chose a secluded spot for the night. Surrounded by thick grasses and bushes, the ground became their resting mat, soft and welcoming.

Though arduous, Rama’s arduous journey was now illuminated by purpose and resolve. Every step brought him closer to his destiny. Sita lost in the beauty of the flowers and the symphony of birds, was a vision of peace and joy. The sacred trio rested under the canopy of Yamuna’s lush green banks, unaware that the unfolding of a greater cosmic design lay just ahead.
