New York: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned that Indian exports to the United States could soon face tariffs ranging from 20% to 25%.
The statement comes just days ahead of his August 1 deadline to address ongoing trade barriers.“India is my friend, but it charges higher tariffs than many other countries,” Trump said, reiterating his concerns over India’s tariff regime.
While a final trade deal remains pending, the President acknowledged, “The deal with India is not finalised, and we will see what has to be done.”
Indian government officials told Reuters they are preparing for the possibility of steeper US duties as a short-term challenge. A US delegation is expected to visit India by mid-August to resume comprehensive trade talks, with hopes of reaching a broader bilateral agreement by September or October
