Amaravati: Acting on a complaint over the desecration of idols by unknown miscreants at a Subramaniam Swamy temple located on a hill in the Gonuguru village of Kuppam in Chittoor district, the police acted switfly and unraveled the truth.
Incidentally, Kuppam is native of former AP chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
According to the district police, the Urban Kuppam police sprung into action and dispatched 3 special teams to investigate the case. During their investigation, while following the leads presented by the temple management, temple priest and a few locals, it was unearthed that Jyothi, a mentally unstable lady who frequently visited the temple, desecrated the idols on March 31 under the influence of toddy.
Speaking about the same, the Chittoor police chief, Senthil Kumar, said; “This temple is located at an isolated location and is very rarely visited by the desciples, unless its a special occasion. Even the priest visits the temple only once a week.”
No sooner the police received complaint, they begun investigation forthwith. The temple management, priest and locals in unison expresed their suspicions against the arrested lady. Jyothi is mentally unstable and frequently visited the temple at odd hours, the locals apparently informed the police. Police traced Jyothi. and on questioning she revealed that on March 31, after consuming toddy at a local store, she went and desecrated the idol. Sge aksi adnutted that the descreted deity was throw in a ditch 20m away from the temple.
She also told the police that she went back to the village the same day and claimed that ‘She has killed Murugan’ in front of multiple villagers who did not take her seriously due to her mental condition. Murugan is how Subrmanian Swamy is referred to, locally. It was only on the 6th when the priest visited the temple that the matter was reported. We thank each one who helped us crack the case in 24 hours.”
Speaking about the AP Police’s awareness programme , the SP said,’ The AP Police is doing a lot to spread awareness and protect every place of worship. Throughout the process we are also ensuring citizen participation to make it more effective. We request the citizen to approach us in case they spot something suspicious in their vicinity or anywhere else and also take active part in the process of spreading awareness.”
He also appealed to people not fall prey to fake news.
