Modi after talks with Trump: Destroying terror camps is India’s priority

India Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in the US on Sunday as part of his three-nation tour, will soon hold his first bilateral talks with President Donald Trump at White House today.

The two leaders are to have a one-on-one meeting in the Oval Office between 1.20 a.m. and 1.40 a.m. IST, whereupon they are expected to discuss a range of “strategic issues” of common interest, including trade and counter-terrorism.

It will be followed by hour-long delegation talks between the two nations in the Cabinet Room of the White House.

The two leaders will then go on to address a joint press conference, after which Trump will host a first-of-its-kind working dinner for PM Modi under the current administration.

11.15pm:US Department of State on Salahuddin: Today’s action notifies the U.S. public and the international community that Mohammad Yusuf Shah, AKA Syed Salahuddin, has committed, or poses a significant risk of committing, acts of terrorism. Designations of terrorist individuals and groups expose and isolate organizations and individuals, and result in denial of access to the U.S. financial system. Moreover, designations can assist or complement the law enforcement actions of other nations.

11pm: US Department of State on Salahuddin: “Mohammad Yusuf Shah, AKA Syed Salahuddin, is the senior leader of the militant group Hizbul Mujahideen (HM). In September, 2016, Salahuddin vowed to block any peaceful resolution to the Kashmir conflict, threatened to train more Kashmiri suicide bombers, and vowed to turn the Kashmir valley “into a graveyard for Indian forces.” Under Salahuddin’s tenure as senior HM leader, HM has claimed responsibility for several attacks, including the April 2014 explosives attack in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, which injured 17 people.”

10.50pm: The notification (on Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin being designated a terrorist by the US) has just come. We will look at the notification. In general, it does vindicate India’s long standing position that cross-border terrorism has been behind disturbances created in Kashmir… We welcome this notification. It underlines the fact that India and US face threat of terrorism and they are working together to address this threat.

10.48pm:Notification by US Department of State: “Department of State has designated Mohammad Yusuf Shah, also known as (AKA) Syed Salahuddin, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) under Section 1(b) of Executive Order (E.O.) 13224, which imposes sanctions on foreign persons who have committed, or pose a significant risk of committing, acts of terrorism that threaten the security of US nationals or the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States. As a consequence of this designation, US persons are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with Salahuddin and all of Salahuddin’s property and interests in property subject to United States jurisdiction are blocked.”
