In a bid to debunk unflattering GDP calculations, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday put his foot in his mouth by claiming that “maths never helped Einstein discover gravity.”
Addressing the Board of Trade meeting in New Delhi, Goyal was discussing the USD 5 trillion economy goal set by PM Modi when he suggested that people should not get into “calculations on television”.
“Don’t get into the calculations on the television that say for a USD 5 trillion economy, the country will have to grow at 12 per cent, today it is at 6 per cent. Don’t get into these maths. Maths never helped Einstein discover gravity,” said Goyal.
“If he (Einstein) had only gone through structured formulae and what was past knowledge, I don’t think there would have been any innovation in the world,” he added.
After his comments went viral on social media, Twitterati trolled him for the gaffe and schooled him on the real discoverer of gravity. “According to Piyush Goyal, Einstein discovered gravity.. Science or History dono ek sath Khatre mein h….,” wrote one Twitter user.
